5 Things You Should Know About Invisalign Before You Buy

Posted on June 5, 2015 by Dr Peter Grant

If you want straight teeth with Invisalign, the TP Originator or Clear Correct, consider the following 5 factors | Gold Coast Orthodontist Dr Peter Grant

Here at Peter Grant Orthodontics, we understand that Invisalign and other clear aligner treatments like the TP Originator and Clear Correct are still quite new orthodontic treatments.

Go back a few decades and think about it – who would have thought that there would be a way to straighten your teeth without metal brackets and wires that is pretty much invisible? Clear aligner technology like Invisalign has opened the door for adults and teenagers alike to seek discreet orthodontics. People who have struggled with misalignment for years now potentially have an option that can give them beautiful results.

If you really want to straighten your teeth with Invisalign, the TP Originator or Clear Correct, it is important that you consider the following 5 factors that could influence your eligibility and the success of your treatment.

1.       Not everyone is eligible for the treatment

We thought this would be the best one to cover first up. Unfortunately Invisalign cannot be used for everyone. The severity of your case will influence your eligibility for the treatment. Basically speaking, patients who have the following problems are most likely to be approved for the treatment:

  • Overcrowded teeth
  • Widely spaced teeth
  • Crossbite
  • Overbite
  • Underbite

Some patients with these conditions may not be eligible – it really depends on how long you are willing to wear Invisalign, your budget plus a couple of other factors. During your consultation with Dr Peter Grant, he will discuss with you the best solution to your unique situation before you undergo treatment.

2.       You have to wear your clear aligners pretty much all the time

Patients often think that they can get away with wearing their trays for less than 20 hours a day. Invisalign is prescribed to be worn for 22 hours, daily. This means that when you are not eating or brushing your teeth, you should be wearing your aligners.

If you chose not to wear them all the time, your treatment will likely take longer, your teeth are at higher risk of moving out of position and it’ll probably cost you more in the long run.

3.       You will need a travel toothbrush, toothpaste and floss

If you don’t want poor oral health than it is important that you keep a travel toothbrush, some travel toothpaste and floss on you for after your meals. You will need to brush your teeth before placing your trays back in your mouth. This will help to keep your teeth healthy and white.

We suggest that you steer clear of abrasive toothpastes otherwise you may damage the trays. Don’t clean your trays with abrasive toothpaste either. It will roughen the surface of the tray which will allow bacteria to settle and will give the tray a yellow appearance.

4.       It can take a bit of time to adjust

Need an excuse to cut back on snacks? The constant idea of having to brush your teeth every time you want to put your clear aligner back in your mouth is an annoying deterrent.

Some patients have said that they had problems getting used to talking clearly with Invisalign but eventually they adjusted to the aligners.

You’ll need to brush your teeth after drinking a cup of coffee, tea or wine (amongst other staining agents) so if you want to save time, cutting back will help.

5.       You will like them better than braces

Patients often comment on how comfortable and easy the treatment was compared to traditional braces. If you are eligible for clear aligners and your condition is not too severe, we recommend investing in it. They are more comfortable compared to braces, barely noticeable and virtually painless.

Do you want straight teeth for your wedding?

Posted on July 25, 2014 by Dr Peter Grant

More and more brides-to-be are being fitted with braces in the months leading up to their big day. A perfectly straight smile is attainable for all brides and can be quicker and more affordable with clarity braces from Peter Grant Orthodontist at Beenleigh.

Everything is planned perfectly; the white gown, the white limousine, the flower petals down the aisle with the handsome fellow waiting for you at the altar. The day goes off without a hitch; everyone had fun, lots of dancing, speeches and gorgeous food.

When you get the photos back, you notice something. Instead of visually prompting how much you enjoyed yourself, standing as a timeless reminder of how happy you felt in that moment, you can’t take your eyes off your crooked teeth! Every photo of you laughing and smiling is now ruined by something that could have been easily prevented.

Peter Grant Orthodontics at Beenleigh doesn’t want this to be a reality for anyone, having a perfect smile is every bride’s right.

Clarity Braces

Clarity braces by 3M are the cheapest and most efficient method used for straightening teeth on a short timeframe and tight budget. Leading up to a wedding, there is no doubt your financial situation will monitored more closely. Clarity braces are cheaper than most orthodontic treatments currently available on the market.

What makes clarity braces so much more attractive is how inconspicuous they are. The brackets, to which the metal wire is fixed, are ultra-small and translucent. The brackets are specifically designed to blend in to the natural colour of your teeth to hide the fact you are actually wearing braces while straightening your teeth at the fastest rate possible.

Need proof? Take a look at this picture of Faith Hill confidently wearing her Clarity braces.

Affordable, inconspicuous and quick – did we mention comfortable?

Clarity braces are extremely comfortable. After a few days of being fitted, you will not even notice them being there and can carry on with your day to day activities and lifestyle.

Other benefits of clarity braces include:

  • Resistant to any staining or discolouration
  • Innovative new ceramic material made for maximum functionality and attractive appearance
  • High stress bearing material giving a strong overall construction
  • Long lasting and durable
  • Dome design to minimise irritation
  • Ultra small bracket size prevents soft tissue contact

How long before my wedding should I get braces?

There is no average time for how long you should wait before having braces fitted. Each individual will have a completely different alignment to the next individual therefore it would be incorrect to provide any type of average. Timelines are given on a case by case basis directly communicated from your Orthodontist, Peter Grant.

We advise you book a consultation as soon as you start planning your wedding to maximise your corrective results.

Braces are for adults too!

Posted on June 14, 2014 by Dr Peter Grant

Orthodontic treatment is a lot more affordable in recent times so there’s no time like the present to get a smile you can be proud of.

shutterstock_48995098

Many patients who take their children for orthodontic treatment have crooked teeth themselves. They usually allude to the reason of “back in my day, braces were too expensive but it’s too late now” in reference to the minefield they now have on display. This is usually met with a state of confusion when they are told by the orthodontist “adults can have braces too you know.”

Currently, adults make up just under half of the braces wearing population and orthodontic treatments have never been more affordable. Statistically speaking, using age as an excuse is no longer a valid one and all adults are entitled to a smile they can be proud of.

Adults have 32 teeth and their job is to breakdown and effectively ‘prepare’ all the different foods in an adult diet. So if you think about it, each one of those 32 teeth has a specific role to fulfil for all the different types of food you choose to consume. If your teeth are crooked, they are not living up to their full potential and may actually be doing you more harm than good.

Ok, so you know you should get your teeth attended to but you’re concerned about the aesthetics?

This is a completely understandable concern for adults contemplating orthodontic treatment. Many have professional jobs where personal appearance is an element of their career while others are genuinely conscious about the way they look day to day.

Don’t despair! If you are conscious about the way braces may impact your profile as an adult, there is good news. Wide selections of treatments are available to dental patients across Australia which are now designed to go virtually unnoticed. The days of having a mouth full of metal are almost gone and the discomfiture associated with the appearance is no longer an area for concern.

Braces on adults can achieve excellent results and the following treatments are our top 2 preferences;

Clarity Braces

Clarity Braces are an effective treatment option that looks great; meaning you can hardly notice them at all. Not only are they practically translucent in appearance, they are comfortable to wear. The simple procedure will have you in and out of the orthodontist’s chair in no time and the price is one of the more competitive options for orthodontic treatments that are currently on the market.

You’ll sense an increase in confidence knowing that your natural teeth are what catch people’s attention – not your braces. Clarity braces stay in the one place throughout the alignment process.

Invisalign Invisible Braces

Invisalign Invisible Braces straighten your teeth by applying a virtually invisible custom shaped aligner. These aligners are replaced every 2 weeks which helps gradually shift your teeth into the desired position. Each time you use a new aligner it is slightly different to the last one, ensuring your teeth are constantly shifting and reaching alignment milestones.

Each aligner is clear and removable. Never will you have to worry about food getting stuck or lodged as you would if you were to opt for braces. Aligners can be removed while you eat, brush and floss your teeth. The average Invisalign process will take approximately one year and during that time very few people will notice you have them in, unless you tell them of course!

Dr Peter Grant and his team of orthodontic specialists at Beenleigh are the true smile engineers! If you would like to make an appointment to explore what treatment is suitable for you, make an enquiry.

ceremic

Having a dentist or orthodontist inform you that you need braces or wanting to straighten your teeth for cosmetic reasons is not always the most appealing prospect…

But when it comes to making positive first impressions, having a flawlessly straight and full smile is definitely the best place to start. If you’re finding your bite is not quite right or those front teeth are just not really smile-worthy, you may find that orthodontic treatment is just the perfect thing to help boost your self-esteem.

With a range of different treatment options on the market, it gets difficult to decide on the right treatment for you. Invisalign aligners may seem like the best choice, but if your need for treatment is because of a bite problem or severe alignment issues; you may need braces instead. This is where Peter Grant Orthodontics can help you! Offering clarity braces by 3M, our orthodontics has a fast acting and effective treatment to your orthodontic needs.

What sets Clarity Braces above the rest?

It’s hard to know what treatments are the best for each patient’s individual needs. This is why our orthodontist Dr Grant has provided you with 5 reasons why Clarity braces are the superior choice when it comes to orthodontic designs.

  • Clarity braces offer a time efficient treatment that is a less noticeable option to traditional braces. Commonly known as ceramic braces, this particular brand of ceramic orthodontic treatment is made using fine-grained ceramic materials with small translucent brackets.

  • Although the treatment method is similar to metal braces, 3M Clarity braces use a transparent design to blend in with your natural teeth, displaying a small but strong frame to assist the straightening process.

  • This type of treatment also makes use of innovative materials to assist the removal of the braces and provide a far more comfortable option for the patient compared to alternative types of ceramic braces.

  • Contrary to some ceramic braces, the Clarity Braces by 3M resist staining and discolouration that can sometimes happen with other brands of clear braces treatments.

  • More affordable payments than Invisalign, the clarity braces have the ability to straighten your teeth in a fast and effective method. They can also correct certain problems that may not otherwise be able to be amended with Invisalign.

Getting braces doesn’t have to make you feel overly self-conscious; by choosing Clarity braces you’re able to get your pearly-whites back to perfection without drawing too much attention to your orthodontic treatment.

Because the design blends in to your natural teeth and resists stains, you can successfully get through your treatment in a time friendly way, you can eliminate the need for further orthodontic treatment for the remainder of your life – provided you follow the instructions during and after your treatment given to you by your orthodontist.

Post braces care

Refreshing your smile doesn’t end at braces. After months of braces over your teeth, there comes the day when your orthodontist removes them! After your braces treatment, our fantastic orthodontist will design a custom made retainer to help your teeth remain straight.

Retainers come in a few different styles and are necessary to stop your teeth from naturally siding back into the position they were in before your treatment. Not to worry though, your orthodontic professional will thoroughly explain all phases of your braces during your consultation to make sure you are 100% comfortable with all aspects of your treatment plan before commencing.

There is plenty of treatment and post treatment information available to all our patients! If you’re planning on getting braces and are looking for a less noticeable treatment, make sure you book a consultation with us at Peter Grant Orthodontics in Beenleigh and find out how we can help you achieve that perfect smile with Clarity braces today.

Caring for your smile during orthodontic treatment

Posted on April 3, 2014 by Dr Peter Grant

Now that you have made the first step towards straightening your teeth for a healthier and beautiful smile, it’s now time to learn how to maintain your treatment to ensure optimal results.

At Peter Grant Orthodontist in Beenleigh, we ensure our patients are educated on how to best care for their teeth after undergoing orthodontic treatment. For those patients, as well as those who are considering treatment, this article will help you learn more about how to help yourself  achieve that dream smile.

How often should you brush?

While it’s important to follow a consistent oral care regime, it’s even more important to follow a stringent oral care routine during orthodontic treatment. This is because food particles are often much easier to lodge in between the crevices of your teeth and underneath your braces.

For this reason, it is recommended to brush your teeth and floss after every meal, or at least twice a day for at least 2 minutes. We also recommend using an electric toothbrush since manual toothbrush can leave excess plaque behind your braces.

What is the correct way to brush your teeth?

Hold the brush parallel to the floor against the side of your teeth. Guide the power brush head from tooth to tooth, following the natural curve of your teeth and gums.

  1. Hold the brush in place on each tooth for a few seconds before moving on to the next tooth. With an electric brush, you don’t have to press hard or scrub. Just let the brush do all the work for you.
  2. Don’t forget to brush the insides of teeth, the tops of teeth, and the back of your mouth behind your back molars.
  3. Clean brackets by angling the brush head against them. Make sure the brush also cleans under the wires.
  4. Remember to replace your toothbrush or brush head every 3 months so it continues to clean efficiently.

Ongoing consultations to ensure treatment is on track

Once your orthodontic treatment begins, you will be required to visit us periodically according to your personal treatment plan. The average treatment time is 12 – 18 months, with patients typically visiting every 8 weeks during treatment.

Are you considering Braces

If you are unhappy with crooked or misaligned teeth then Orthodontics may be the solution for you. At Peter Grant Orthodontist we offer Clarity Braces and Invisalign Invisible Braces , harnessing the new advancements to help you achieve the straight healthy smile you desire without compromising the aesthetics of your smile.

What happens at your visit

During your first visit we will look carefully at the alignment of the jaw. It is very important to have the jaw functioning correctly before we start to straighten your teeth. We can then begin to straighten your teeth using the most appropriate treatment, customised to your specific situation. The process will be a gradual, subtle movement over a period of time.

Orthodontics can benefit people at any age, however at a younger age, orthodontic treatment ensures your children are treated before further dental complications may develop.

The team at Peter Grant Orthodontics are looking forward to providing you with a restored smile and a bright future with a custom orthodontic plan. Contact us now for a consultation.

Your Invisalign FAQs, answered!

Posted on March 5, 2014 by Dr Peter Grant

InvisalignFor patients who are looking to straighten their teeth but are not a fan of metal braces, Invisalign is the preferred choice for orthodontic treatment.

At Peter Grant Orthodontic we are asked many questions when it comes to this advanced and innovative treatment. As such, we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help you learn more about the treatment before visiting us here at our practice located in Beenleigh for your consultation.

# 1 What is Invisalign?

Quite simply, Invisalign is the clear alternative to metal braces. Invisalign straightens your teeth with a series of clear, virtually invisible custom-moulded aligners.

# 2 How does it work?

The course of treatment involves changing aligners approximately every two weeks, moving your teeth into straighter position step by step, until you have a more beautiful smile. And unlike braces, these clear aligners can be removed while you eat and brush your teeth, following a normal routine.

#3 What are the benefits

  • Clear aligners are practically invisible, so there’s no unwarranted attention to your mouth. In fact, very few people will notice at all – unless you tell them.
  • Aligners are smooth and comfortable
  • Aligners are removable, allowing you to remove them easily for important functions, when eating, brushing and flossing your teeth.
  • No dietary restriction as you can remove them before meals

# 4 How long is treatment?

On average Invisalign course of treatment takes about a year. You’ll see Dr Grant, your Invisalign Accredited Orthodontist, every 6 to 8 weeks for adjustments and to check progress. At regular intervals, you’ll receive a new set of custom-moulded clear aligners to continue the straightening process. The total number of clear aligners is specific to you, determined by Dr Grant for your course of treatment.

# 5 Am I a suitable candidate for Invisalign

Teens and adults who have who have healthy teeth and gums but slightly crooked or misaligned teeth are the best candidates for Invisalign. Given the flexible and convenient nature of Invisalign and the ability to remove them at will, it is important for patients to be committed to wearing their aligners when required to receive optimal results.  Since there is a certain degree of responsibility and commitment to the Invisalign treatment it is not suited for everyone’s lifestyle. For this reason, Invisalign is a more popular solution for adults. During your consultation here at Peter Grant Orthodontists in Beenleigh, Dr Grant will perform a full mouth assessment to determine if your teeth are suited for the Invisalign treatment.

Orthodontics: Not just a pretty face.

Posted on December 17, 2013 by Dr Peter Grant

December - orthodontics not just a pretty face

For many patients, orthodontic treatment is a way to improve their oral health, correct malocclusions, align teeth and achieve a beautiful winning smile. However, did you know that straight teeth, with the help of orthodontics, can also boost your oral and overall health?

Peter Grant Orthodontists in Beenleigh shares a few reasons why having a straight smile is so important for your oral hygiene and overall health.

Why straight matters

When our teeth are not aligned, food particles can lodge themselves between cracks and crevices. When this happens, a build-up of bacteria can develop which leads to plaque forming on top of our enamel. Over time, this can lead to tooth erosion and decay. What’s more alarming is the fact that this condition can cause inflammation in our gums, causing gum disease. When this inflammation is left untreated it can lead to serious systemic health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

Here at Peter Grant Orthodontists we care just as much about preventative dentistry as we do about restorative. After all, prevention is better than a cure. Not only can orthodontics save you a lot of money in the long term, it can save your overall health too.

The straighter the teeth, the simpler the maintenance

While we always encourage our patients to maintain good oral hygiene, flossing and proper brushing cannot dislodge the trapped plaque that has formed in our mouths. This dilemma can make achieving a healthy smile nearly impossible. Smoothing out the surface of your teeth can simplify the cleaning process, making trapped food particles more visible and easier to reach with your toothbrush and floss.

Closing the gap

Orthodontics is not just about treating patients crooked or crowded teeth. When the gums are exposed it’s basically the same as placing a welcome mat at the front of your mouth for bacteria. These gaps create a home for bacteria to breed and, if left untreated, can lead to gingivitis and in more severe cases, periodontitis. Again, smoothing out your smile will not help only bring your teeth into alignment, but it will also help to prevent serious future oral conditions from occurring.

Release the pressure

Orthodontic treatment can also relieve TMD, also known as Tempomandibular Joint Disorder. If a patient is suffering from tightness in the jaw this could be a sign of TMD. However, the solution to jaw pain may be as simple as straightening a few teeth. When teeth are misaligned it creates an uncomfortable bite. This pressure from the inadequate bite can induce soreness and make chewing, eating and swallowing difficult and painful. At Peter Grant Orthodontists we will conduct a full mouth assessment to get a better understanding of your mouth and determine if orthodontic treatment will be the best solution to treat your TMD pain.

But I don’t want to wear metal braces…What other options are available?

With the advances in dental technology, our patients can go about their lives without being self-conscious of their smile. Modern orthodontics helps straighten your teeth without gluing metal brackets to the front of your teeth. Making them not only effective but also discreet. For those who need work done but don’t want to draw attention to their teeth here at Peter Grant Orthodontists we have two popular solutions for yo

Clear Aligners: Clear aligners are a virtually invisible way to straighten your smile. They are also a lifestyle-friendly, and can be removed to eat clean your teeth and for special occasion

Lingual Braces: Unlike clear braces lingual braces are more like traditional braces, with one clear exception. Traditional braces are placed on the front of the teeth, lingual braces are placed on the inner side of your teeth. So only you and your orthodontist will know you are getting the treatment.

Orthodontic treatment is often carried out in conjunction with other treatments provided here at  Peter Grant Orthodontists in Beenleigh. Some of these treatments are:

  • Crowns
  • Dental implants
  • Veneers
  • Tooth whitening
